Some whiskies break the rules so spectacularly they rewrite them. This Bunnahabhain “Sherried Smoke” is exactly that kind of rebel. Bunnahabhain is famous for being Islay’s gentle giant—unpeated, elegant, refined. But not this one. This is Bunnahabhain with its gloves off, heavily peated and then finished in an oloroso sherry butt that transforms smoke into something altogether more seductive.
For context: when most people think Bunnahabhain, they think honey and sea salt. This bottle laughs at that reputation, delivering hearty peat smoke wrapped in layers of fruity sweetness and caramel. It’s like finding out your quiet librarian friend has a motorcycle and a leather jacket hidden in their garage.
The Contradiction That Works
This heavily peated single malt started life maturing in American oak, building its smoky foundation. Then came the twist—additional aging in an oloroso sherry butt that brought waves of dark fruit, caramel, and Christmas cake spices to dance with that core of Islay peat. Bottled at 46% ABV, it’s the perfect strength to let both the smoke and sherry sing without overwhelming either. The result? Smoke that’s been to finishing school.

The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. opened this cask in 2024, releasing just 480 bottles for their Cooper’s Choice collection. Heavily peated Bunnahabhain is already rare—most of their production stays true to their unpeated house style. Add in sherry finishing and limited availability, and you’re looking at a bottle that challenges everything you thought you knew about this Islay distillery.
