Win Ardbeg 17 Year Old — Committee Exclusive
99p each | Max 10 per person
A ghost brought back from the dead. 17 years. Committee members only.
The original Ardbeg 17 launched in 1997, one of the first bottles out of the distillery after Glenmorangie rescued it from silence. It became a cult favourite — then Ardbeg killed it off in 2004. Two decades later, Dr Bill Lumsden went back and rebuilt it from scratch.
To do it, Ardbeg had to break every rule it now lives by. Modern Ardbeg is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% or above. The 1997 recipe wasn’t. So the team combined peated and unpeated stock, chill filtered it, and bottled at 40% ABV — exactly as it was. Lumsden traced the original flavour profile note by note to get it right.
The result is Ardbeg turned down rather than turned up, and it’s a revelation. The nose is fresh and clean — pine resin, aniseed, sea spray and a soapy lavender softness that’s almost delicate for Islay. Water pulls out flinty minerality, sweet peat and toasting bread. The palate is creamy, with aniseed toffee, café latte and fennel, the smoke held right back, before a long finish of chewy oak, cocoa powder and tar.
A Committee release, allocated in tiny numbers to members and a handful of select retailers. Most people will never get near one. This one’s 99p a go.
