It starts life in traditional American oak, where eighteen long years draw out warming layers of honey and vanilla and mellow the spirit into something rich and inviting. Then comes the second act: a finishing period in handpicked Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, sourced by The Balvenie from Spain. PX is the sweetest of all sherries – white Spanish grapes left to ripen under a relentless sun until the wine turns dark, syrupy and dessert-like. That sweetness seeps deep into the whisky, and the result is a single malt that’s as luxurious as it is lively.
Expect a deep, mahogany pour. The nose is plummy and creamy with aged sherry oak, a gentle woody hint and a delicate whisper of clove. On the palate, dark fruits take over – raisin, fig, black cherry and plum – layered with mandarin, toffee and dark chocolate, all woven through with that signature Balvenie honeyed sweetness. The finish is long and warm, drifting into chocolate-dipped cherries, caramel and a final flourish of orange peel.
This is one for the serious collector and the patient sipper alike. A travel retail exclusive that’s increasingly hard to find – and once it’s gone from us, it’s gone.
