Win The Balvenie 21 Year Old PortWood – The Speyside Standard-Bearer 99 tickets | £4.99 each | Max 10 per person
Twenty-one years in the making. Finished in 30-year-old port pipes. One of the most awarded Scotch whiskies of the last three decades. RRP £230+. Yours for a fiver.
The Balvenie doesn’t need an introduction. But this bottle deserves one. The PortWood 21 is widely regarded as the finest creation of legendary Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE – the man who pioneered cask finishing back in the 1980s before anyone else in Scotch was even thinking about it. First released in 1996, it’s been collecting gold medals ever since.
The process is deceptively simple. Take a marriage of rare Balvenie whiskies matured for over two decades in traditional American oak. Then transfer them into port pipes – not just any port pipes, but 30-year-old ones that have spent three decades absorbing the character of fine Portuguese port wine. Stewart then keeps a watchful eye on the whisky until the port influence is just right – enough to add depth without masking that signature Balvenie honeyed elegance.
On the nose, ripe raisin and white peach sit alongside honey and subtle nuttiness. The palate is where it really sings – creamy, silky, with layers of fruit, honey and warm spice. The port finish doesn’t overpower. It polishes. Think cranberries and cooked raspberries, a touch of cocoa, gentle balsamic. The finish is long, gentle and nutty, with that unmistakable Balvenie sweetness lingering well after the glass is empty.
This is the distillery that still grows its own barley, still malts on traditional floor maltings, and still employs its own team of coopers and a coppersmith. Nobody else in Scotland does all of that. The whisky tastes like it.
