Win the Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III [Reclassified] — The Whisky That Baffled Military Intelligence
99 tickets | £2.99 each | Max 10 per person
In 2003, US Military Intelligence flagged a small Hebridean distillery as a potential weapons of mass destruction site. Two years later, a bright yellow Ministry of Defence submarine washed up off the same coast, and two Islay fishermen towed it home. You couldn’t write it. Bruichladdich didn’t have to — they just bottled it.
That’s the legend behind Whisky of Mass Distinction, one of the most loved cult series in modern Scotch. The original Yellow Submarine dropped in 2005, the Legend Resurfaced in 2018, and now — for the distillery’s 25th anniversary — the submarine has been reclassified. A replica of that lost submersible still stands in the distillery grounds today, and this bottle is Bruichladdich’s tribute to the years when they answered a military blunder with a press release and a sense of humour.
The whisky itself is no joke. Fourteen years matured entirely on Islay, built to the original 2005 recipe: first-fill bourbon barrels layered with French red wine casks. Bottled at a punchy 54.2%, non-chill filtered, natural colour — the full Bruichladdich treatment, in their elegant unpeated house style. Master Blender Adam Hannett calls it a whisky that makes you smile as soon as you nose it: honeyed oats and buttery shortbread with a ripple of nutmeg, hazelnut and gentle ginger heat, then orange zest, honeysuckle, apple and pear before crème brûlée richness and a touch of sea salt bring you right back to Islay.
Limited edition. Bright yellow. Impossible to ignore on any shelf — and a story you get to tell every time you pour it.
