Win Port Dundas 22 Year Old — Twenty-Two Years From a Distillery That No Longer Exists
0.99p each | Max 10 per person
Twenty-two years old. 50% ABV. A single cask from a Glasgow distillery that was flattened fifteen years ago.
Port Dundas was founded in 1811 at the highest point in Glasgow, on the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal, and it grew into the biggest distillery in Scotland. By the 1880s its Coffey and pot stills were turning out more than two million gallons a year for the blenders who made Glasgow the centre of the Scotch trade. It ran for the best part of two centuries. Then in 2009 Diageo announced it was moving grain production to Cameronbridge, the offers to buy the site fell through, and within two years Port Dundas had been demolished. There is nothing left of it but the casks that were already filled.
This is one of them. Distilled in 2003, in the distillery’s final decade, and left alone for twenty-two years before Claxton’s bottled it for their single-cask Exploration Series at 50%, non-chill filtered. Grain whisky gets dismissed as the cheap stuff blends are built on, and young grain deserves that. Old grain is a different animal. Two decades in oak turns it creamy, tropical and deep, which is why anyone who has tried one tends to go quiet about how good it was.
The nose is big vanilla, banana chips and apricot jam — classic aged grain, all cream and orchard sweetness. The palate is soft and sweet, more jam and vanilla, with the oak starting to make itself known. The finish dries out gently, a touch of tannin and a last note of sweetcorn to remind you where it came from. This is generous, easy and far more complex than the word grain suggests. A whisky for people who think they don’t like grain whisky.
Port Dundas is finite in the most literal sense. Every bottle opened is one fewer in the world, and there is no distillery left to make any more.
