Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Excellence (1990s)
A name almost lost to time. The Glenfiddich Excellence 18 Year Old was created in 1992 to honour the 18 direct descendants of William Grant who helped build Glenfiddich into the world’s most recognised single malt. It was a short-lived expression – bridging the gap between the old Ancient Reserve ceramic decanters and the standard 18-year-old range that followed – and has been quietly forgotten by most.
But not by the people who’ve actually tasted it.
At 43%, this is old-school Speyside at its most elegant. Think rich vanilla, ripe pear, baked apple and honeyed malt, layered with marzipan and spicy oak that never tips into bitterness. The palate is beautifully creamy, the finish long and warmly spiced. It’s a whisky from an era when Glenfiddich had something to prove at this age – and proved it convincingly.
Presented in its iconic black and gold bottle, this is one of the most understated and handsome designs of its decade. It looks as good on a shelf now as it did thirty years ago – arguably better.
70cl. 43% ABV. Speyside. Distillery bottling.
