Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world. Three distilleries survive. Springbank is the one that never compromised: the only distillery in Scotland to malt, distil, mature and bottle 100% of its whisky on one site, with the barley turned by hand on its own floor maltings and the spirit run through its famously odd two-and-a-half-times distillation. The Mitchell family have owned it since 1837. Nobody else has done any of this for as long.
The 21 is what all that stubbornness is for. Every August the allocation lands, retailers ration it, and it’s gone within minutes. The 2026 edition follows the port-led recipe of the last two releases — around 65% port casks, 25% bourbon, with rum and sherry making up the balance — and the result is a Springbank at its richest and most unctuous, the coastal edge still there underneath but wrapped in twenty-one years of dark fruit.
On the nose it opens with Medjool dates and sticky toffee pudding, then treacle, stewed plums and blood orange zest, with a thread of soft peat behind it. The palate keeps the smoke going alongside smoked figs, caramelised brown sugar, cigar box and blackberries, and that unmistakable Springbank savoury streak — think Iberico ham. The finish is long, earthy and warming, with banana bread and cinnamon lingering. This is a lightly peated whisky that has turned smoke into seasoning.
